The OtherlifeThis is the look of my days, not quite night, definitely not morning, and my eyes are red from writing and reading. Sometimes, I feel like there is no in between and it is hard to decide upon AM or PM. One thing for certain, the challenges for each day push me forward into uncharted territory.

This past Saturday, I attended my Georgia Romance Writers meeting and came away with new thoughts, new visions, and new ideas. Why? I was surrounded by writers. Some struggling to keep everything together and some celebrating new books and trying to balance their time and others hitting the blank spot of the brain. I realized none of us have it all together and this made me feel good. Do I like it? Nah. But, we keep surrounding ourselves with other writers and gather support. This is so important when you are struggling with a page, a chapter, a thought, and know you have others you can bounce these thoughts out there and get feedback.

I have found out that writers jump on the wagon and either pull or push you forward. It is the momentum from their hard work that propels new writers forward. Then, it is our turn to do the same to other new writers. Writer friends are friends we turn to in times of questions and they understand our problems. Why? Because, most of them have been in the same situations and managed to break through to publication and above.

Make certain you have life-lines to throw out to all of your writer friends, and they have the same coming your way. Beta Readers, Critique Partners, and Writing Groups are the best life-lines writers have. They may not be perfect, but it is a starting point. Be kind. Be thoughtful. Be yourself. But . . . never compare yourself to another writer. We are all different and our needs are different. Keep your avenues open for everyone. Make sure your bridges to others are always open.

My big happening this week, I received my book in print and can hold my ‘baby’ in between my hands. And, it was not an easy birth, but I am busy on two other books. Maybe these will be a little easier to produce. No matter what happens, I will continue to write, write, and write. And you, as a writer will continue to write and write and write. Once a writer, the need to write, share, and publish never goes way. Good Luck to all of you writers.

A saying, I believe in and maybe you will too, is from Eleanor Roosevelt.
“The future belongs to those who dream.”

Happy Dreams. Happy Writing.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, thirty of our SilverSneakers® gathered for our third annual Spring Fling at the 57th Fighters Group Patio. It was a beautiful day. Bright blue skies, great sunshine, and plenty of umbrellas covered the tables as we basked in the spirit of SilverSneakers. We all exercise, but the 3-F’s are included: Fitness, Friends, Fun. Believe it, we know how to do all three.

This was also a special occasion as we celebrated the upcoming marriage of our own Marta to George. You will see them together…and that is the couple. Life creeps up on us when we have fun and the enjoyment with friends is the best life can give us.

I’m not certain how all this will print out, pictures, as we had plenty of cameras this time and great communication connections. A lot of pictures for scrapbooks and memories. This is not the problem. The person entering the info on her blog is. These are not all the pics, downloading takes time and my eyesight, along with my fingers need a rest. Have fun. Enjoy. More to come. If you don’t see yourself here, you’ll be in the next batch.

AND, if you live in Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Dunwoody., or parts close by, check out our classes and get healthy, exercise, and have a great time.

p.s. The music is great.

Magic Mondays

An IdeaMagic Mondays or do you still dread the thought of a new week, the unknowing events that could pop up, or the fast pace you need to keep going?

This could be for everyone: professional workers, stay-at-home moms or dads, the new secretary, the guy at the car wash, or the waitress at the new diner. But, this is important for all of you writers out there. Submissions to get done, books to review, emails to answer, new stories to . . . .and you stop. Your well is dry and nothing seems to come to mind. Don’t hang up. Think Ideas, Ideas, and more Ideas. Yeah. Right. No. This is a Magical Monday and you can gather ideas in buckets. Stop moaning and get moving. Did you dream last night? Can you remember the dream? Did you scribble down the dream? Okay, you can’t read your writing, but maybe one word wiggles more than others. When you were in the shower did something slide into your head and then down the drain?

Remember, it is the simplicity that keeps repeating in our minds, if we let go and hang tight. Do not try to analyze the captions or the pictures. Pull your imagination from its hiding place and put it to work. Do not write and drive, but even a cheap recorder or your cell phone can capture your words. Sometimes, these billboard companies, string out a long line of actions to get to the point. They can make you smile and laugh. See, now you are letting go of inhibitions and making your brain exercise its capabilities.

If you can, or have the opportunity, visit an animal shelter and watch the action and play between the pets, or use the time to watch your own pets. No small kids at home, visit a day care center and catch the antics of children trying to get more than their share of recognition. Or, watch your grandchildren vie for your attention and the ways they make you laugh.

Forget the television, the smart phone, I-Pod, and link into the everyday possibilities. Hey, another area to grab ideas is a Tat Parlor. Everyday, people get their bodies decorated with signs, symbols, flowers, and whatever else happens. Go into a parlor and talk with the artist. Ask questions. You might be surprised at some of the answers.

I don’t have time to do all of this. No, I’m certain we all don’t, but ask yourself what happens on a Magic Monday? You find ideas where you least expect them. You snap a photo, write down a few words, you notice your surroundings, you enjoy life. This is where you can find your ideas for more situations, more stories, more writing.

Get out there this Monday and let your mind wander over different paths. Do not always go to the same place for lunch. Do not take the same route when you drive somewhere and do not stagnate your thoughts or yourself.

Put yourself into the magic, even if it happens to be a Monday.

Find your own Magic Monday, and then bring it to the rest of the week.

Happy Writing.  Happy Dreams.  Happy You.

The OtherlifeDo any of you wake up and know the events of the day will not be smooth?

When I opened my eyes , this cold morning, an OFF DAY greeted me. My head tried to list everything from top to bottom before I could get in a good stretch. Slinging my feet out of warm covers to the cold floor hurt. My toes could not find their slippers. One good thing: SUNSHINE poured into my room.

The coffee process started, I knew this would put a little ‘umph’ into my day. Turning around I choke. All the household chores done the day before showed dust particles on every surface. Dark, dreary days hide the magic of dust and dust bunnies. Then, the sun brightens the windows and dust magic stares back at me over the furniture, floors, and all surfaces.

I blow across the desk, moving some of the sprinkles away from my computer. With the lid open, I hit the ‘on’ key. The screen is filled with sparkles. I continue without bothering about the wipe cloth. At least my brain has strength to write a few pages.

A few paragraphs later, I try to print out the work. I can edit online, but prefer paper and pen to get every mistake, well, most of them. Printer hums, paper goes through, no print. The ink cartridge shows ’empty.’ I check the desk drawer, no make that drawers, for more ink. Nada. Positive I bought two cartridges, I run through some receipts. Only one shows up.

Okay, forget about the printed page until later. It is too cold to jump up and head to the closest office supply store. Besides my robe and slippers are keeping me warm. More coffee. I need more coffee. Back in the kitchen, my stomach growls. Breakfast. I check the cupboards and spot some Brown-Maple oatmeal. This sounds good. A small amount of time passes and I smell a funny order. My fingers are on the keyboard and my oatmeal is scorching in the pan. Good bye, breakfast.

Words are pounding in my head, “Let me out. Let me out.” I comply with no oatmeal but another cup of coffee would help. I watch the words fall from my head to my fingertips. I continue plugging away at the keys, and ignore the ringing phone. I keep writing and the phone keeps ringing. Not to worry. Voice mail will pick up. I am too far away to hear the words, but they will be there later.

I sneak a peek at the clock. Yee! whiskers. I need to get ready to teach my class. If I hurry, I can make it with time to spare. But, no. A tennis shoe has dirty laces and the one stretch top I wanted to wear is in the dirty clothes. Thank heavens, the toothpaste tube is full.

Dressed,  I head to my car knowing there is plenty of gas. I can stop at the store for ink. Time tells me, NO. My brunch will be a couple of bananas. Not a good way to start the day, but work with what you have.

Class is great. Maybe the bananas turned the OFF, off, and I can have a neat day after all. I smile. Then it hits me. Why didn’t I hit the early morning with a bigger smile, a better attitude , and a few shrugs of the shoulders.

I believe, we all need an OFF DAY to bring our lives into the sunshine. Stress fills each day and the smile, the laughter, and the lightness of spirit gets pushed back. Today, let all the brightness you can into your life. If you aimed for 50 pages and got 20 done; hey, you worked. Now, go play. You’ll have company when you get home….dust bunnies.

DiamondLook at this diamond and notice the brilliance, sparkles, and cuts. Why aren’t we more like a diamond — free to sparkle at any moment, and show a daring brilliance to anyone? Because, we need to live by rules. We have a rule for this, a rule for that, and can always make up a new rule to follow.  Sure, some rules are necessary, but let’s talk about the rules we put on ourselves.

Forget you are a writer, reader, reviewer, office manager, or whatever job you have. Forget everything if you are retired. We need a discussion with a clean plate, and I do not care if you scraped the last morsel off with a knife, fork, spoon, or licked the bowl clean.

Nothing, nothing at all can change yesterday or any part of the past. The future is not a part of the present, so do not get caught up on what might be. Life can change in an instant.

Dare to do something different. Burdens do not allow you to travel light, so do a little re-packing into a small overnight bag. Then, look at all the things you consider burdens and see if there is something you can do to create a new touch. On a second thought, take a look at these burdens and see a different way to look at them. One thing pops up:  LISTS.

Let go of lists, play each moment to moment today in the present. Yeah, you have to get up, fix breakfast, get the kids off to school, hubby off to work, and yourself off to work. No kids, no other off to work, so now you have yourself. You stare at the list posted on the fridge, computer, I-Pad, or phone. What’s the worst thing to happen if you can eliminate some of them?

Maybe, it is time to break your own rules. Look around and enjoy what is before you: the smell of the air, feel the sun on your face, or mist from the early morning. Go for the walk you always wanted to take in the early morning. The house won’t get cleaned, the dirty dishes will not put themselves into the dishwasher, but everything will still be there when you return.

As you walk through life, take the hand next to yours and squeeze. It may be the only touch felt today by you or someone else. Smile. A smile costs nothing and makes the world a better place. Share your smile with all you meet. Smile at everyone, everything, and nothing. You will receive a million smiles back.

Don’t worry.  Remember the old song…don’t worry, be happy,? Try singing the words or humming the tune and realize whatever happens, happens. Learn to roll with the punches. Be flexible and reap the rewards of a few broken rules.

I’d love to hear from you after you have tried breaking a few of your rules. The more we can enjoy life, enjoy others, a free feeling in our lives, the better we can break the rules and roll in the pleasant time of the present.

I want to pass on to all of you a phrase by Emily Dickenson:  “I dwell in possibilities.”

May you have nothing but possibilities pop up for you. I also want to thank all my followers,  and if you want to comment, propose new material for my blog, please check out my website:  http://www.patricia-patterson.com and leave a note in the contact section.I’d love to hear from you.

Hang tight…..the next post will be about demons. Yeah, the monsters we create for ourselves in our lives. We will dig deep and have fun.
