WRITE EVERY DAY

images_028As writers, we hear this phrase all the time. We read in magazines the need to put the pen to the paper, fingers to the keyboard, and let the creativity flow. Some days are not creative days, but do you write?

I do. I write grocery lists, to do lists, which become more frequent as I get older. I check the calendar for any special information and jot this down on another list. Now, my lists have lists and I feel ready to hit the road. Later, I remember I did not add to my story and my manuscript needs attention.

Does any of this sound familiar? Sure. Now what? I learned to force myself to sit at my desk and pound away at the keys. Kinda like scribbling with a crayon. Some days these squiggle words cover page after page. About the time I want to give up, a fresh wave of creativity rushes in and the doodling turns into fresh material for my work-in-progress. This flow of words keeps me writing and writing until I feel worn out and empty. Then, I know my writing time is up.

As I read what is on the computer screen, I am surprised at the way the story is taking another twist. I didn’t plan this, but I won’t argue with the flow of creativity.

To be honest, some days I write early, real early, in the mornings, after the coffee pot burps into my empty cup. During these sessions, my mind races back to thoughts I had during the night. Thought that would not have appeared later on in the day. I get them captured right away. I also write in the late afternoon. I’ve gotten out of the house, sat in traffic, listened to conversations, watched people, and somehow, new ideas are born.

This is where my trusty three-ring notebook comes into play. I jot down bits and pieces of what I see or hear. It is my way to jolt my senses into their right places: feel, hear, taste, touch, and see.

Stuck, I go for a walk. Also the fitness classes I teach, help shake things around and I get another breath of energy.

Make your daily writing a positive affair with words. Bring new life into your manuscript and have fun. Yes, writing is work, but when work becomes a game with words, scenes, and characters you are creating. Go for it.

CREATIVITY IS VISION.

Happy Writing.

DREAM WITH YOUR EYES WIDE OPEN

images_025You’ve got to be kidding, right? NO. This is another way to use your imagination. Sometimes when you dream at night, things do not look the same in the daylight, or you can’t remember every detail about your dreams.

This is your chance to dream in the daylight. Better yet, watch your imagination at work. Guess, you could call this the ‘what if’ part of your life. As you go about your daily activities, think of things you’ve wanted to do. Does a little voice tell you, “be practical, or keep both feet on the ground?” NOT TODAY.

This happens to both male and female, men and women, whichever you want to use.

What would it feel like to drive a new sports car, a huge pick-up truck with big tires, or a convertible. Go to a local dealership, or several, and try out the different makes and models. (No not the ones on the floor, the cars.) Let everyone know you are “just looking.” As you sit in the new car, where does your imagination take you? Are you on a long trip, but where to? In the convertible you are on the way to the beach; the one out of your state. Let your ideas build momentum and become bold.

Then as a female you always wanted to put on a new, silky, flowing long dress. Head to a department store you only look at the mannequins in the windows. Today, you open the door and walk in with determination to try on a couple of those ‘out-of-reach’ dresses. Your fantasy becomes alive with each twist and turn of the flowing material. Does this romanticized your day? Can you picture yourself walking down a long spiral staircase into the arms of . . .Hey, your choice.

Males also have these dreams with their eyes wide open, just different. Look at that new boat. He can see himself behind the wheel with a captain’s hat on his head. So, he goes to a boat show, or a marina, and plays the part of the Captain. Maybe his fantasy takes him as the owner of fishing boat tours for visitors. Or he is working for the FBI and looking for fugitives who took off in a speed boat. This is his daytime imagination.

You are both writers, unknown to each other, and appear at a bookstore where an author is reading and signing a new book. This could be either of you sitting at that table. It is YOUR book. People are there to purchase. Imagination. Soon you begin to talk with all the guests attending. Some are readers, some writers, and all these new stories begin to put creative thoughts into your heart and soul.

Everyone reaches for their ‘cards,’ and you have just found new writing friends, new readers, and introduced yourselves to the bookstore manager. A creation of wishful thinking, fantasy, dreaming, bold thoughts and all done WITH YOUR EYES OPEN.

Keep your night dreams and the pad next to your bed, but do not forget to daydream and watch your creative thoughts at play.

RESTLESS NIGHTS

Two friends“Hey, it’s been quite a while since we checked in with Patricia. Maybe too long.” Edna sounded worried. “With this title, we should have kept in touch more often.”

“What’s wrong with right now?” Ethel answered. “If we read this post, we can figure out how to help.”

How many of you have gone to bed so tired it hurts to pull the covers up? You lay in complete darkness and silence. Too dark? To silent?

Our lives are primed for ‘go.’ The absence of activities creates unrest in our bodies and minds. This causes us tossing and turning, and the need to roll over to ease the tension. Useless movements. Now what?

Turn these tensions into story ideas. But, we are supposed to sleep. Which would you rather do: be aggravated or mesmerized with new ideas?

Close your eyes, open your mind, and hear or see the chaos. Maybe both. Sometimes this comes with a faceless image in your dreams. Put them to work. Make them tell you what they want. Are you breathing harder and faster? Are these images running from something or someone? As the mystery seeps into your being, keep going. These dream characters may want to show you important clues

You feel cool breezes on your face. There is a sense of grass, street lights, and ripples of water. A park with a lake shows up on your dream screen. The images stop. You stop as they point to an object floating in the water.

Your eyes open wide. The dream breaks into many pieces. You roll over, switch on the light, and grab your pen. After a few scribbles on the pad, your body relaxes. Your pillow cradles your head and you drift off to sleep.

The story inside you wanted the attention you either did not feel or could not see. Your unrest became the only avenue for the characters to get your attention.

“Whew, this was a long night, but glad we were close by if she got stuck in the dream.” Ethel nodded to Edna. “Now, we can take our nap.”

“And dream,” Edna giggled.

HECTIC DAYS?

Lost ConfidenceDays get hectic, some more than others. I’ve tried to analyze the business, but nothing seems sane. We pull up the calendar or schedule on the computer, and then double-check the I-phone. Every minute taken up with some chore, activity — YOU NAME YOURS.

Sure, there are a lot of things we can’t ignore like feeding the family, getting groceries, sending the kids to school, and if you work outside the home, another chunk of time. If both hubby and wife are employed, the chunk gets bigger.

Then, there is the time to schedule for kids’ activities, meetings, writing and meeting deadlines. Hey, what about the gym for exercise and

STOP!

You need to get centered, calm, and clarify yourself. Wouldn’t you like to improve your creativity, concentration and connection to others?

MEDITATION!

I hear your replies loud and clear – “I do not have time for this. I’m too busy.” No, you are not going to sit cross-legged and go into a trance with “HMMMMM or AHHHHH.” Start out slow. When you wake up, do not jump out of bed. Instead, take a minute or two for some deep breaths from your lower abs to your chest. Feel the breath creeping up and filling your lungs, and then a deep exhale as the breath returns to your abs. Practice. Practice. During the day while driving, working or wherever the day takes you. In just this little bit of time, you become aware of a clear mind and get to know your body. Make this your daily silent time without anyone knowing what you are doing. Your private breathing time. Soon, you will find yourself more cool, calm, and collected in everything you do,

AND!

Do not be surprised when you increase this time from one or two minutes upward. A silent mind is the rewards you gain along with no clutter in your thoughts.  Your daily activities seem less hectic and your enjoyment of life fuller.

Inhale, exhale, inhale exhale and breathe deeper and enjoy with every breath you take.

Listen to YOUR body.

ADRENALINE’S SILVERSNEAKERS SPRING FLING

On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, thirty of our SilverSneakers® gathered for our third annual Spring Fling at the 57th Fighters Group Patio. It was a beautiful day. Bright blue skies, great sunshine, and plenty of umbrellas covered the tables as we basked in the spirit of SilverSneakers. We all exercise, but the 3-F’s are included: Fitness, Friends, Fun. Believe it, we know how to do all three.

This was also a special occasion as we celebrated the upcoming marriage of our own Marta to George. You will see them together…and that is the couple. Life creeps up on us when we have fun and the enjoyment with friends is the best life can give us.

I’m not certain how all this will print out, pictures, as we had plenty of cameras this time and great communication connections. A lot of pictures for scrapbooks and memories. This is not the problem. The person entering the info on her blog is. These are not all the pics, downloading takes time and my eyesight, along with my fingers need a rest. Have fun. Enjoy. More to come. If you don’t see yourself here, you’ll be in the next batch.

AND, if you live in Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Dunwoody., or parts close by, check out our classes and get healthy, exercise, and have a great time.

p.s. The music is great.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU MOMS, GRAN-MOMS, AND IF NOT, GRAB A KID AND PRETEND.

Patricia Patterson

He conducts writer’s workshops and corporate storytelling seminars throughout the world.

I could go on and on, but then the interview would never get done. Please check online for all of his accomplishments. NOW THE INTERVIEW:

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING?

Since I can remember. I actually found an old Abbot and Costello script that I wrote when in the fourth grade. That’s going way back.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WRITING?

The glamorous lifestyle 🙂

HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO SWITCH FROM NOVEL, TO NON-FICTION, TO SCREENWRITING, AND PLAY WRITING?

It’s refreshing to switch genres, and I think it makes me a better writer.

HOW DO IDEAS FOR ALL OF YOUR WRITING COME TO YOU?

Every which way. Things I see and hear. Conversations I have. Things I read. Dreams, Fantasies, Mostly from my day-to-day interactions with people and literature.

HOW DO YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT TO NAME YOUR CHARACTERS?

I listen to the sound of the letters together in the name and see if that sounds feels right for that person.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WRITING?

I love those timeless moments when the writing pours out of you and the pages flow onto the computer, and not have a real job.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT WRITING?

The days it doesn’t flow.

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO A NEGATIVE REVIEW?

I go work out and vow never to read reviews again.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE?

Passion, patience, and perseverance – – that is all.

WHEN YOUR NOVEL, SCREENPLAY OF PLAY GETS PUBLISHED, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AS THE HEROINE AND HERO?

Depends on the piece. But in the end, the writer doesn’t have a say in this.

IF YOU COULD LIVE ONE OF THE STORIES OF A BOOK YOU’VE READ, WHICH ONE AND WHY?

I love THE GAME OF THRONES, series, but wouldn’t want to live in that world; instead would probably want to be Harry Potter. Who wouldn’t?

DO YOU HAVE AN ODD QUIRK THAT IS NOT KNOW OR KNOWN BY A FEW?

I get paid by the hour to work in bed. THAT IS…I write and consult on my laptop and my bedroom is my office.

THE LAST QUESTION, PROMISE, WHAT IS STORY CONSULTING?

I am not an editor. I work with writers to develop their stories. I work with writers on growing their stories and in doing so, they also grow as writers. It is an amazing process and I am happy being a part of this.

Thanks, Richard. I appreciate your time and thoughts. Hope to see you again in Atlanta.

For all readers, this is only a small part of the Professor. Go to his website: http://www.profk.com. and check out opportunities for you, your writing, and your stories.
